Teknologic EMDR
EMDR therapy addresses the underlying concept that traumatic memories are not adequately processed by the brain, resulting in intense emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs. EMDR seeks to help the brain reprocess these memories, resulting in their integration into a person’s larger memory system and reduction of symptoms (1).
The EMDR procedure is often administered in weekly, up to 90-minute individual sessions over the course of 3 months. The exact treatment length can vary based on client needs and response.
In recent years, technology has begun to play a significant role in EMDR treatment. Computer software programs have been developed to facilitate EMDR sessions by displaying visual stimuli (moving dots or images) that clients can focus on during reprocessing. Therapists can control the speed, direction, and intensity of these visual stimuli, allowing them to tailor their session to each client’s unique needs.
To conduct online EMDR sessions, a computer monitor with a high-resolution screen is recommended. A headset is also helpful to allow the use of auditory BLS methods such as tapping or voice commands.
A private space is important for EMDR because it can bring up painful and sensitive memories during the reprocessing phase of the treatment. It is important to have a private space to ensure that you are not interrupted or distracted during the process. In addition, EMDR requires that you maintain mental containment to prevent unwanted negative reactions during the session. Your therapist will teach you techniques for this mental containment, especially if it is something new for you.
